Why I’m an infectious disease specialist

“What drew me to medicine, and specifically infectious disease, was witnessing how vulnerable patients become when illnesses disrupt their lives. During my training at Mayo Clinic, I saw how the combination of diagnostic precision and evidence-based treatment could restore someone’s health in ways that felt almost miraculous. While infectious disease certainly has its share of challenging, chronic conditions, the field’s rapid scientific advances mean we can often offer patients clear paths forward. Being part of that process, to help someone return to their family, their work, their life, represents the kind of impact I want my career to have.”

Approach to infectious disease care

Dr. Vaisak Nair believes effective care requires partnership. His role is to be the infectious disease expert while recognizing that patients are the experts in their own lives. He prioritizes clear communication, ensuring people understand not just what is being treated, but why and how, so decisions can be made together that fit their values and realities. The best treatment plan, he believes, is one the patient can and wants to follow.

He is grateful that patients consider him an active listener, and strives to hone this trait on a daily basis in and outside of work.
