Why I’m an infectious disease provider
“I am a wound care specialist who found a home in infectious disease where I am able to practice my clinical expertise on a wider scope as well as perfect my surgical techniques.”
Approach to infectious disease care
Amy McCarthy’s approach to care is holistic, emphasizing the importance of treating the whole patient rather than just focusing on the disease or wound. She believes that true healing involves understanding and addressing all aspects of a patient’s well-being – physical, emotional and psychological. For Amy, quality care and a positive patient experience are rooted in this comprehensive approach, ensuring that every patient feels understood, supported and cared for on all levels.
More about Amy McCarthy, infectious disease provider
Amy thrives in a learning environment, which ultimately led her to the ever-evolving field of infectious disease. In addition to her certification as an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN), she is also certified as an adult gerontology nurse practitioner (A-GNP-C). She treats patients age 17 and older, but helping elderly patients have a new gusto for life after they’ve healed is one of the favorite aspects of her work.
Other efforts Amy is proud of include her work in limb-salvage programs, negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) educational programs, and her assistance in helping patients regain their ability to walk. Her fascination with the body’s ability to heal inspired her to become a certified wound specialist (CWS) after nursing school. Amy also regularly provides in-house antibiotic stewardship and infection prevention education to sub-acute rehab and long-term care staff and families. She spoke on Infectious Disease and Wound Care at the Cors at the Shore Symposium, where she was honored to be the first and only nurse practitioner presenter.
