Why I’m an infectious disease specialist
“Infectious disease is ever-changing and requires one to be constantly thinking, learning and have knowledge of the whole body and global medicine. There are endless possibilities in what you can do with infectious disease, and I love what I get to do as an infectious disease doctor.”
Approach to infectious disease care
Dr. Avani Desai believes that in medicine, and particularly in infectious disease, it is crucial to listen to the patient and elicit the details of their story and experience. Combining this information with the objective findings from the physical exam and clues from labs and studies is essential to arriving at the correct diagnosis. However, she says that proper management is an art: it involves adapting medical knowledge and treatment to the individual patient and their unique circumstances.
