Why I’m an infectious disease specialist

“I enjoy complex problem-solving. My most memorable mentors when I was a medical student taught me that listening to the patient was the key to solving a patient’s problem. I also enjoy being in a field where we are constantly learning.”

Approach to infectious disease care

Dr. Ira Gurland’s approach to care and management focuses on listening to patients’ concerns. He emphasizes that infectious diseases and internal medicine require a collaborative approach, where the patient and physician work together as a team, alongside the patient’s other providers. Dr. Gurland believes that careful coordination, persistence and follow-through are essential for delivering quality care and ensuring a positive patient experience. He is proud that patients tell him he is a good listener and part of an amazing team.
