Why I’m an infectious disease specialist

“I was originally introduced to the field of infectious disease through a medical school mentor named Dr. Bruce Fisher. His wisdom and authority benefitted his patients in a warm, caring manner. The opinions he contributed to the diagnosis and management of cases were always respected, and I continue to strive to emulate his example. He was an instructor, a caregiver and thoughtful colleague to his peers. Ultimately I chose to apply for fellowship training in infectious disease and I thank his influence and guidance.”

Approach to infectious disease care

Dr. Joseph Kim’s approach to patient care and management emphasizes the importance of effective communication. He believes that the ability to explain diseases, prognoses, care plans and recovery in a way that patients can understand is central to the doctor-patient relationship, as trust is difficult to establish without a clear understanding between both parties. With a focus on fostering relationships with patients and their families, Dr. Kim encourages open dialogue, ensuring they feel comfortable asking questions about their care. His personal experience with medical issues in his own family allows him to empathize with patients and understand their concerns.

Dr. Joseph Kim has a deep commitment to providing high-quality care. He was appointed Chief Medical Officer of ID Care in 2024, bringing a wealth of experience to the role. He specializes in diagnosing and managing a variety of infectious diseases. Dr. Kim enjoys the challenges infectious disease cases present, appreciating that each patient is unique. His passion for lifelong learning ensures that he stays current with evidence-based practices in this diverse and ever-changing field.

He notes how the recent SARS-CoV-2 pandemic embodies how ID doctors make a meaningful difference combatting a rapidly evolving threat. Treatments and management were introduced and challenged, and in just a few short years, innovative vaccine methods were implemented and scaled to a global population. Antivirals were rapidly developed, and steroids and immune modulators have been tried and endorsed for use in specific contexts with benefits in morbidity and mortality. Dr. Kim says that all of medicine is a practice of lifelong learning. He believes that a good infectious disease provider is one who defends evidence-based practices and is always learning ways to make patient’s lives better throughout their career.

Outside of his medical practice, Dr. Kim is involved in student mentorship (Delbarton School, Haverford College, Rutgers RWJ Medical School). He also teaches residents and students at MMC and OVL. He is a devoted husband and father to two daughters. He enjoys spending quality time with his family and playing golf.
