Why I’m an infectious disease provider
“Being an infectious disease clinician is like being an ‘investigator’ or a ‘mystery solver.’ It involves a lot of thinking, looking for the clues from the patient’s story, and putting the pieces of clues together to come up with appropriate diagnostic laboratory/imaging tests to figure out the underlying source of infection. That’s what makes infectious disease an exciting field.”
Approach to infectious disease care
Kara Yi believes that empathy is the cornerstone of quality care. She understands that being a sick patient can make someone feel vulnerable, scared or depressed, and she emphasizes the importance of showing genuine care for each individual. Kara recognizes that every patient is someone’s family member, friend or loved one, and treats them accordingly. She also believes that without an empathetic heart, one cannot be a good listener, and without being a good listener, one cannot be a good clinician. Kara reminds herself of this principle every day before she walks into a patient’s room.
