Why I’m an infectious disease specialist

“Infectious diseases affect every body organ. Unlike many other specialties this requires the physician to understand and evaluate the entire patient not simply one organ system. The need to be attentive to the entire patient and the intellectual challenge of understanding how germs impact human health, both from an individual and community perspective, is what drives my interest in the field.”

Approach to infectious disease care

Health care is complex, and navigating the system can be extraordinarily difficult. Dr. Nahass believes that by treating each patient as if they were a family member and helping them navigate this complicated process, it is possible not only to achieve good care but also to attain faster resolution with better outcomes. Dr. Nahass says this approach fosters a great experience for both the patient and their family.

His approach to patient care is rooted in listening to patients’ concerns, ensuring their perspectives are understood, and addressing their worries to achieve the correct diagnosis. He notes that in medical school, the first thing they teach is to “listen to the patient.” Dr. Nahass knows that it is very important to understand the problem from the patient’s perspective. This will assure that their concerns are addressed, and it will invariably lead to the correct diagnosis. He welcomes their thoughts about what is wrong and encourages communicating any of their concerns.
