Why I’m an infectious disease provider

“I became an infectious disease specialist because I’m excited about making a real difference in how infections are treated. Often, the misuse of antibiotics can lead to resistance, extra costs and unwanted side effects. I’m committed to changing that! In the subacute rehabilitation and long-term care settings, I get to provide tailored care right where patients are, helping them avoid unnecessary hospital stays and improving their overall experience.”

Approach to infectious disease care

Stephanie believes that building a strong, trusting relationship with both the patient and their family is essential. She emphasizes the importance of clearly communicating the plan of care, answering questions, and providing time for patients and families to share their concerns. Additionally, Stephanie values open two-way communication with the patient’s primary providers to maintain a high quality of care and ensure an excellent patient experience. She believes that this collaborative approach demonstrates that everyone is working together as one cohesive team.

More about Stephanie Szylar, infectious disease provider

Stephanie began her nursing career as a staff nurse in the ICU, then transitioned to being a population care coordinator with a family practice physician. After completing her MSN, she worked for several years as a general house nurse practitioner in a subacute/long-term care facility. During her tenure there, she gained knowledge of the subacute and long-term care settings and built a good foundation of general practice. She realized the impact she could have on decreasing inappropriate use of antibiotics and unnecessary ER visits and found that infectious diseases were a cause or complication of many patient visits. This was another factor in her decision to continue and specialize in infectious diseases.

When not at work, Stephanie enjoys hiking and managing her busy family of three children, including cheering them on at basketball, soccer and dance. She also volunteers as a Girl Scout leader and is active with the Cub Scouts.
