A team that included ID Care’s Dr. Mohamed Hasham has explored how to diagnose and treat a rare type of infection called a nocardial epidural abscess. The important work, co-authored by Dr. Hasham, was published in the March 2024 issue of Interventional Pain Medicine.

Usually, these infections happen when someone already has a broader nocardiosis problem, but this report focuses on a special case. It describes a 39-year-old who got severe complications after having epidural steroid injections for back pain and diabetes.

Even though it was difficult to figure out what was wrong and treat it correctly at first, the patient got better with the right antibiotics. Dr. Hasham’s work shows how crucial it is for doctors to be alert and use precise methods when dealing with rare but serious conditions like nocardial epidural abscesses.
