Infectious Disease Studies, Research & Clinical Trials by ID Care
At ID Care, New Jersey’s top infectious disease specialists, we’re not only clinical leaders but also renowned researchers. We are driven by our mission to be leaders in infectious disease prevention, early diagnosis and treatment. Critical to this aim: Research and clinical trials to discover new innovations in treating infectious diseases and enable infectious disease specialists at our practice and in our field to better care for patients and save lives.
Pioneering infectious disease research & clinical epidemiology for a better future
For over 30 years, ID Care’s infectious disease doctors and researchers have been pioneering a variety of state-of-the-art clinical trials to be at the forefront of cutting-edge treatment options. That means we give our patients access to some of the most effective medications available today.
ID Care’s clinical epidemiology is the study of causes, patterns and effects of disease in segments of patients and the links between treatments and health outcomes. Combined with our research, these efforts protect patients and communities from transmissible diseases. Epidemiologic investigation also advances knowledge on the patterns of disease, causes and mitigating factors for infectious diseases, and interventions that could limit the risk for infectious disease in individuals and communities – in New Jersey, the United States and beyond.
Infectious disease researchers you can trust
Lead by Dr. Ronald Nahass, the ID Care research team includes highly trained and compassionate physicians, a full-time infectious disease research medical staff, and administrative and support staff – all united by an unwavering dedication to the health and well-being of our patients.
Since the inception of our research program, we’ve performed well over 100 medication studies and delivered new and improved treatments for patients with infectious diseases. These efforts resulted in:
- Treatments for HIV that allow patients to live a normal life, free from illness and free from the risk of disease transmission.
- Treatments for hepatitis C that universally cure patients.
- Other advancements in therapeutic areas that have included participation in the world-wide effort to find a cure for hepatitis B, which is now achievable in 10%-30% of patients.
- Development of effective treatments for COVID-19.
- Improved treatment of super bugs, those bacteria resistant to many antibiotics.
- And improved testing and diagnosis of other infectious diseases.

Understanding risks with infectious disease clinical trials
There are potential risks to participation in a clinical trial, which may include unpleasant, serious or even life-threatening side effects to experimental treatment. The experimental treatment may not be effective for the participant, and the protocol may require more of their time and attention than would a non-protocol treatment.
Your dedicated ID Care medical team will discuss the risks and possible benefits of participating in a clinical trial before beginning any course of treatment so you can make an informed and confident decision.
Milestone infectious disease studies & research by ID Care
Since the 1980s ID Care researchers have studied many infectious diseases and pioneered new treatments to improve patient outcomes. ID Care’s research and clinical trials have included study of some of the most common infectious diseases, including:
- Sexually transmitted infections such as HIV.
- Bodily-fluid or blood-born infections like hepatitis B & hepatitis C.
- Viruses like the flu (influenza), pneumonia and COVID-19.
- Bacterial infections like tuberculosis.
Some of ID Care’s milestone research projects are highlighted below.
New treatment for chronic hepatitis B shows promise of a cure
New Jersey ID Care physician co-authored one of two recent major chronic hepatitis B research studies & presented findings of a functional cure at EASL Congress, June 5-8, 2024, in Milan, Italy.
Findings from a milestone infectious disease study by Ronald G. Nahass, M.D., of ID Care and additional researchers to find a cure for chronic hepatitis B virus (CHBV) delivered encouraging results that signal a functional cure for CHBV through sustained control of the disease.

Dr. Nahass co-authored the work indicating HIV patients can take a once-weekly pill to improve treatment adherence.
In a significant breakthrough, Dr. Nahass of ID Care, other investigators from across the country, and Gilead Science’s antiviral research and development program have unveiled promising results of a once-weekly human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) oral regimen – marking a potential paradigm shift in HIV treatment for the 29.8 million people in antiretroviral therapy globally.
