Types of Travel Diseases
Depending on where your travels take you, you will be more or less likely to contract certain diseases. Some, however, are not bound by region, making it imperative that you receive all of the recommended vaccinations before going abroad. Some of the most commonly treated travel diseases include:
- Hepatitis A and B: diseases that adversely affect the liver
- Japanese encephalitis: a rare disease that’s spread by mosquito bites and causes brain swelling, as well as potential nerve or brain damage
- Meningococcal disease: a bacterial infection that’s spread through nostril and throat secretions and can lead to fatal infections in the brain lining or blood
- Measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR): a group of diseases that causes a variety of symptoms, including, fever, rash, headache, sore throat, fatigue, swollen glands, and more
- Pneumococcal pneumonia: a disease caused by bacteria in the upper respiratory tract and spread through coughing
- Polio: a contagious disease spread through contaminated food and drink
- Rabies: a viral infection transmitted by the saliva of infected animals
- Shingles: reactivation of the chickenpox virus that’s caused by the varicella-zoster virus and results in a painful, blistering rash
- Tetanus: a bacterial disease characterized by muscle rigidity and spasms
- Traveler’s diarrhea: arises from eating food or drinking water that’s contaminated with fecal matter and classifies as the most common travel illness
- Tuberculosis: a highly contagious bacterial disease most commonly developed in the lungs
- Typhoid: a very rare bacterial infection that’s spread via poor sanitation and unsafe food handling
- Whooping cough: a highly contagious respiratory tract infection characterized by severe coughing
- Yellow fever: a disease found in the tropical areas of Africa and South America that is spread by infected mosquito bites
