What is a rash?
A rash is an area of irritated or swollen skin with a wide range of potential causes. Many times, rashes are a symptom of another medical condition, and rashes can often be a manifestation of an infectious disease. One of the most common causes of rashes is called contact dermatitis, or an inflammation resulting from direct contact with a material to the surface of the skin. Contact dermatitis can cause redness, itching, and burning at the site affected by an irritant such as a chemical or poison ivy. Some rashes develop immediately while others will form over several days.
What are the symptoms of a rash?
There are hundreds of types of skin rashes, but most are red, bumpy, scaly, crusty, or blistered. Rashes can also be itchy and painful.
